Propanediol is a clear colorless liquid, naturally derived from corn sugar, that is often used as a safer and more sustainable alternative to propylene glycol in cosmetic and personal care products.  It is often used as a replacement for propylene glycol due to concerns about potential irritation and sensitization associated with propylene glycol.   Propanediol acts as a humectant, solvent, wetting agent, and preservative booster, increasing hydration, and preventing microbial growth.  It is an ingredient that helps to retain moisture on the skin and hair to improve hydration and overall formulation texture. It is miscible with several solvents including chloroform, water, and acetone.
